Dr. Austin is proud to be an advocate for breast cancer treatment and breast reconstruction awareness. One in eight women will be affected by breast cancer in her lifetime, and it has a very real impact on the lives of Salem women. Dr. Austin believes that the best way to battle breast cancer is to educate people. Many women who are diagnosed with breast cancer may be unfamiliar with the treatment process, recovery period, as well as the products and services available to them. This is why Dr. Austin chose to be an affiliate, as well as a speaker at the breast reconstruction awareness event on October 19, 2016.

Goal of the Event
The purpose of the breast reconstruction awareness event is to promote information and awareness for people who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and their families. In addition to Dr. Austin’s discussion, peer navigators from the Salem Cancer Institute will speak about their roles in your breast cancer battle. Along with the presentations, there will be exhibit tables for products and services that help patients through their breast cancer treatment journey.
Peer Navigators
Peer navigators are an important component of the Salem Cancer Institute treatment of breast cancer. A peer navigator is there for you and your family during the entire process. They will help you through chemotherapy, radiation treatment, and the reconstruction process. Peer navigators are comprised of breast cancer survivors and trained nurses. During the event, you will be able to meet and speak with a number of peer navigators to discuss any questions, concerns, or feelings you may have.
Exhibit Tables
Educating patients about the products and services available to them can significantly impact the quality of a person’s breast cancer battle. Vendors will display such things as hats, wigs, and prosthetic breasts to help you feel more comfortable during your recovery. Tables for tissue expanders, implants, and ADM vendors will also be present, allowing you to become more familiar with breast reconstruction products.
Hope to See You There

It is an extraordinary place to ask questions of your breast cancer reconstructive team in a relaxed atmosphere and to connect with other people going through the same struggle as you. Whether you or someone you love has been diagnosed with breast cancer, this is an event you should not miss.
