It is difficult to look ahead with specific goals without a clear understanding of where we’re at. When it comes to appearances, a good look in the mirror (or the computer screen) is often the catalyst that leads people to consider how they can address certain cosmetic concerns. We all know that conditions like undereye bags, frown lines, worry lines, and a downturned mouth can age the face. Adults can begin to experience these problems as early as their 30s and most people in their 40s have at least one pressing concern that they would like to address. What stops them is the idea of surgery. Knowing this, we’ve equipped our Salem, OR office with a number of nonsurgical anti-aging solutions. Today, it is easy to say that correcting the signs of aging has never been easier.
Dr. Austin understands the complexities of the aging face, and also understands that many people today prefer a nonsurgical approach to their cosmetic concerns. The easiest way to do this is to restore what has been lost, and that is volume. Early in adulthood, the body dramatically slows down its production of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. When we say early, we mean sometime around age 20 to 25. Because these vital chemicals are in short supply starting at such a young age, savvy twenty-somethings begin addressing their aging process before one might imagine they would need to. Even in this instance, injectables can go a long way at slowing down the formation of troublesome lines and wrinkles. By middle age, a large percentage of adults are relying on injectables to manage their aging skin.
How Injectables Easily Turn Back the Hands of Time
There are two primary categories of injectable treatments, neuromodulators and dermal fillers.
- Neuromodulators like Botox and Dysport smooth dynamic lines and creases. These are the worry lines, frown lines, and crow’s feet that develop as a result of moving the same muscles over and over again through decades of life. Without sufficient collagen to firm the skin, elastin to give it bounce, and hyaluronic acid to plump the skin, the body forms wrinkles. The way that neuromodulators work is by relaxing the muscles that cause us to squint or frown or make other facial expressions. The prudent use of these products does not completely remove one’s ability to express through facial movements. It does, however, limit the muscle enough that the skin no longer creases. The results of neuromodulators can last 3 to 6 months.
- Dermal fillers work differently. Products like Juvéderm, Restylane, and Radiesse correct lines and wrinkles and then some. These products work by depositing hyaluronic acid particles into a target location. In the case of creases like smile lines, the product is injected just beneath the wrinkle. Volume is created by the hyaluronic acid particles binding to water molecules, which pushes the skin outward to smooth the wrinkle. Other areas benefit from the enhanced volume, too. The cheeks, for instance, which can flatten with age. The lips are also a popular area for dermal filler enhancement, as are the lower eyelids.
