(Deoxycholic acid) injection is the first and only FDA- approved injectable treatment that contours and improves the appearance of submental fullness, sometimes referred to as “double chin”. You and your doctor will design a treatment plan tailored to help you improve your chin profile.
During your treatment sessions, your HCP will administer KYBELLA® into the fat under your chin using multiple injections. Many patients experience visible results in 2 to 4 treatment sessions. Up to 6 treatment sessions may be administered spaced no less than one month apart. Up to 6 treatment sessions may be administered spaced no less than one month apart.
Who is an Ideal Candidate for Kybella®?
Kybella is a good treatment option for adults who want to eliminate stubborn double-chin fat. The area below the chin, called the submental area, is somewhat prone to the enlargement of fat cells. These cells are often resistant to diet and exercise. In addition to having excess submental fullness, good candidates for Kybella also have good skin elasticity. If your skin is significantly loose and thin, we may need to discuss alternatives to Kybella or additional treatments to address your skin. The reason is that reducing the fatty tissue beneath loose skin removes some of the structure that is providing fullness or plumpness. So, you don't have to have perfect tissue elasticity to be a good candidate for Kybella but we may explore ways to address laxity. Nova Threads may be a wonderful complement to your Kybella treatment if you could use a boost of collagen in the area.
What Issues Can Kybella® Treat?
The sole purpose of Kybella treatment is to eliminate double chin fat. This injectable does not affect the skin. It inserts deoxycholic acid into the adipose tissue where fat cells have enlarged. This acid specifically targets fat, gradually breaking down the cell walls so the body can metabolize the debris naturally. Kybella has been formally approved for the reduction of submental fullness.
What Makes Kybella® Different from Other Injectables?
Kybella is in its own class of injectable treatments! It is the only injectable at this time that is formulated to target small pockets of fat. Other fillers are used to reduce the signs of aging, primarily the lines and creases that form on the face. The results of other injectables are temporary. The body naturally breaks down those wrinkle-reducing substances over a period of about one to two years. The results of Kybella, on the other hand, can be permanent. That's because the body eliminates the cells that are destroyed by the deoxycholic acid in Kybella.
How Many Treatments Will it Take Before I See Results?
It usually takes multiple treatments to achieve dramatic results using Kybella. We can estimate how many treatments you may need when we examine the fatty tissue beneath your chin. On average, we expect to accomplish patients' desired outcomes in four to six treatment sessions. These are spaced two to four weeks apart to provide sufficient time for the body to process the targeted fat.
What is Recovery Like After the Kybella® Treatment?
To treat the unwanted cells that are causing a double chin, a fair amount of the Kybella product is inserted into the space around the fat cells. This temporarily increases tissue volume. Until the liquid is absorbed by the fat cells, you may experience noticeable swelling in the treatment area. Your upper neck may feel "squishy" due to the fluid. Some people develop areas of firmness or nodules beneath the skin. This is all normal and will all go away in a week or two. To disguise the swelling that occurs, you might consider wearing high-necked shirts or a scarf. To improve your comfort during the brief recovery period after getting Kybella injections, you should avoid applying makeup for 24 hours after your treatment, and should avoid strenuous physical activity for two days. If needed, you can apply cold compresses or ice packs to soothe tenderness or soreness. After at least three days, you might be cleared to take anti-inflammatory medication if needed. Do not do so until it is approved by your provider.
Are There Any Side Effects Associated with Kybella®?
The side effects that are associated with Kybella injections, including the swelling and tenderness that we mentioned, should gradually improve over seven to 14 days. The bulk of the swelling usually gets better in three to four days, allowing you to feel more comfortable with your appearance.
