In response to our last blog, many of you have asked, “What causes wrinkles?” Wrinkles are folds or ridges in the skin caused by habitual facial expressions, aging, sun damage, smoking, poor hydration, in addition to other various factors. Wrinkles are divided into two categories: surface lines and deep furrows.
As we age, the skin becomes less elastic and more fragile due to a decrease in the production of natural oils. Loss of fat in the deep layers of the tissue cause the skin to become loose and saggy. Over exposure to the sun leads to the break-down of collagen and elastin, damaging DNA. I think we are all aware by now that smoking is damaging, but did you know it causes wrinkles? Unhealthy eating habits also contribute to aging.
Anti-wrinkle treatments help to control lines that develop around the eyes, nose, chin, neck, and décolleté. The common term used today is anti-aging and the different methods available to minimize the signs of aging are lasers, fillers, Botox® and topical, anti-aging products.
